The Philippine Department of Health has called for a nationwide ban on vaping products, warning that advertisements promoting vapes as safer alternatives to cigarettes are misleading. In a news release issued on November 22, the Department of Health emphasized that e-cigarettes and their aerosols contain harmful chemicals linked to cardiovascular disease, cancer, and lung disease. The agency also expressed concern over flavored vape products and brightly colored packaging, saying they are likely to attract minors. Citing the 2019 Global Youth Tobacco Survey, the department said that seven out of ten Filipino adolescents aged 13 to 15 use vaping products, and noted that the country recorded its first death last year linked to long-term vape use.

The Department of Health said the government is strengthening cooperation with the World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control to address the issue. It also added that the Health Promotion Bureau will continue conducting awareness campaigns in communities, schools, and workplaces to improve public understanding of the harms of vaping and smoking.
