According to The Brussels Times, citing Federal Health Minister Frank Vandenbroucke, Belgium will ban the sale of disposable vaping devices starting January 1, 2025, becoming the first EU country to do so. The ban has been approved by the European Commission.

“Disposable vaping devices cause significant harm to both society and the environment,” Vandenbroucke said. “This harmful product is mainly targeted at our young people. That is why I am pleased that we are able to remove it from the market.”

Vandenbroucke said that although Belgium prohibits the sale of e-cigarettes to minors, the marketing of these products is “very clever” and “youth-oriented.” Youth use is widespread, and according to one survey, by 2023 about three-quarters of sales outlets were selling disposable vaping devices to minors.

“Belgium is playing a pioneering role in Europe by breaking the power of the tobacco lobby,” Vandenbroucke said after receiving European Commission approval for the ban. “This is another milestone in our fight against tobacco.”

Vandenbroucke said: “We are working toward a smoke-free generation and want people, especially young people, to be better protected and less exposed to tobacco or other ways of smoking. Through this measure, we are ensuring that an extremely harmful product is removed from the market, one that is also cheap and therefore very attractive to young people.”

Non-disposable e-cigarettes will still be allowed, as many people use them to quit combustible cigarettes. “Nevertheless, we have agreed that they can no longer be given lights and other features to make them attractive,” Vandenbroucke said. “It should not be a product that encourages people to start smoking, but rather one used to quit smoking.”
