According to The Straits Times, citing research by Milieu Insight, people in Singapore are smoking less, but vaping device use is increasing.

The average number of cigarettes smoked per week fell from 72 in the third quarter of 2021 to 56 in the fourth quarter of 2023.
Over the same period, consumption of vaping devices and other alternative products increased from 3.9% to 5.2% of the population.
Milieu Insight attributed part of the gradual decline in weekly cigarette consumption observed since the second quarter of 2022 to an increase in the share of occasional smokers relative to regular smokers during that period.
The survey, conducted from December 16 to December 29, 2023, found that the proportion of occasional smokers rose by 1.2 percentage points to 3.2% from the third quarter of 2021 to the final quarter of 2023. The number of former smokers also increased during the same period.
Singapore has banned vaporizers and e-cigarettes. Among the reasons respondents gave for vaping, they said they wanted to reduce secondhand smoke and cut back on traditional cigarette consumption. However, the World Health Organization does not endorse these products as smoking cessation aids.
In December 2023, Singapore’s Ministry of Health and Health Sciences Authority announced that they were stepping up enforcement and education efforts against e-cigarettes to prevent further growth in vaping in Singapore.
