Latest statistics: more teenagers and non-smokers in Jersey are starting to use e-cigarettes
According to Jersey’s latest statistical report, e-cigarettes are helping more smokers quit, but their use is also rising among young people and people who have never smoked.
This trend is reflected in the latest Opinions and Lifestyle Survey report, in which 1,500 people answered a range of questions about life on the island.
The report shows a slight increase in e-cigarette use, with daily users rising from 4% in 2022 to 5% in 2023.
Overall, 26% of adults have tried or are currently using e-cigarettes, up from 19% the previous year.
The data also shows a significant increase in the number of former smokers using e-cigarettes to quit, rising from 22% in 2022 to 36% in 2023.
Among young adults aged 16 to 34, half have tried e-cigarettes, and notably, 29% of them have never smoked cigarettes.
The survey shows that more and more people who are quitting smoking are turning to e-cigarettes to help them break the habit, rising from 22% in 2022 to 36% in 2023.
Director of Public Health Professor Peter Bradley said: “It is becoming more common for children to try e-cigarettes occasionally, but very few young people continue to use them regularly or long term.
Although it is an effective smoking cessation tool, it is not recommended for non-smokers, especially children.”
