Mercer County Commission Considers Ban on New Vape Shops
The Mercer County Commission is considering a possible ordinance to ban new vape shops in the county. This topic was discussed during a special commission meeting on Tuesday.
Commissioner Greg Puckett stated that there are too many vape shops in the county. He mentioned that these shops are not contributing to healthy habits in the county, and the presence of vaping devices in schools is increasing.
Puckett referred to this situation as a "public health crisis." He added that he heard a teacher mention in March that a 5-year-old student was found using a vape in class in Mercer County.
Puckett indicated that there are approximately 20 vape shops in Mercer County, with three more potentially opening in the Athens Road area. He noted that Fayette County has already implemented an ordinance to pause new vape shops. He said the commission will consider whether they can follow suit.
Puckett stated that the commission will consult with Mercer County Prosecutor Brian Cochran to see if the county can draft such an ordinance.
Puckett said, "Even at the state level, there are certain things that need to be addressed. If they truly view addiction as a problem, then it needs to be addressed at its root. That’s what we’re doing. We’re dealing with opioids and all these major issues. The problem starts at your foundation. If we can’t help regulate these places, then we’re not providing fair service to our county."
Puckett mentioned that this discussion is still in its early stages, but he has already communicated with leaders in Bluefield and Princeton, who expressed willingness to adopt this ordinance in their respective areas.
During the meeting, Bluefield City Attorney Anthony Herzel stated that the city is certainly considering this ordinance.
