Coventry Shop Accused of Illegal Vape Sales Closed for Three Months
A shop has been ordered to close for three months due to ongoing sales of illegal cigarettes and e-cigarettes. Coventry City Council stated that action was taken against Tile Hill Mini Market after issuing early warnings to the tenant. Since the shop opened, the business of other legitimate retailers has been harmed, and the low-priced illegal products may encourage children to smoke.
The closure order was issued by the local court on Monday.
Deputy Council Leader Abdul Salam Khan stated that this is the second time a shop in the city has been ordered to close for selling illegal cigarettes, and the first time for e-cigarettes. He said, "This action was taken after a long investigation and previous warnings to the shop tenant, and it was not a rash decision." The council noted that selling illegal cigarettes means the trader is not complying with UK labeling requirements, and the low cost of the products indicates that no duties or VAT have been paid. The council also added that, in terms of e-cigarettes, the nicotine content in illegal e-cigarettes often exceeds the levels permitted by tobacco regulations.
According to the closure order, Tile Hill Mini Market must close completely.
