Winter Park, Florida joins ranks of cities banning smoking in public areas
Winter Park, Florida, has approved a ban on smoking and vaping, which is expected to take effect on December 13.
According to foreign media reports, the City of Winter Park has become one of 25 cities in Florida, USA, to prohibit smoking and vaping in parks, beaches, and recreational areas, though not all forms of smoking are banned.
The measure was first approved at a council meeting on November 8 and is in line with amendments to Florida Statute 386.209. The specific areas affected by the ban are parks and outdoor spaces owned or operated by the city.
According to Jason Seeley, director of the Parks and Recreation Department, the city has already prohibited smoking and vaping in places where children play and where outdoor activities are held. Smokers who ignore verbal warnings may face some form of fine or fee.
The ban will take effect after passing its second reading, which is expected at the next council meeting on December 13.
