Are nicotine-free e-cigarettes still harmful? Cigarettes are harmful because they contain nicotine. E-cigarettes on the market are claimed to be a safe and harmless alternative to cigarettes and are becoming increasingly popular among consumers. If e-cigarettes do not contain nicotine, do they still pose a risk?

A recent study by researchers at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania shows that just one puff of an e-cigarette can damage blood vessels, even if the vapor contains no nicotine.

Promoted as "tar-free and low-nicotine," e-cigarettes claim to effectively reduce the risk of lung cancer. However, a team from the University of California found that e-cigarette users have higher levels of adrenaline compared to the general population, which means they are more likely to experience arrhythmias, heart attacks, and sudden death. Additionally, vaping can increase oxidative stress levels, leading to atherosclerosis. These two outcomes are also commonly associated with the harms of traditional cigarettes.

According to an article published by the World Health Organization, secondhand smoke from e-cigarettes is actually not safe and is a new source of air pollution. Compared to fresh, smoke-free air, secondhand aerosol can have PM1.0 levels that are 14-40 times higher, PM2.5 levels that are 6-86 times higher, nicotine levels that are 10-115 times higher, and formaldehyde levels that are 20% higher. Some metal contents can even be higher than those found in secondhand smoke from traditional cigarettes!

E-cigarettes, whether they contain nicotine or not, still emit carcinogens and other aerosol particles that can irritate the airways. The scientific validity of using e-cigarettes as a smoking cessation tool can only be verified through practical experience; quitting smoking remains the healthiest lifestyle choice.
