Trump: Will Meet Industry Representatives to Solve the 'Vaping Dilemma'
On November 12, Beijing time, U.S. President Trump stated on Monday that he would meet with representatives from the e-cigarette industry to address the current "vaping dilemma".
Trump also mentioned on social media that the health and safety of children and related industry jobs would be the focus of the discussions during this meeting.
The Trump administration announced in September that it would draft a ban on the sale of flavored e-cigarette products, but faced strong opposition from the e-cigarette industry and advocates. They argued that the ban would lead to job losses for many and deprive those who use the product as an alternative to traditional cigarettes of their choices.
Public health experts have urged the government for years to ban flavored e-cigarettes, warning that e-cigarettes could undermine years of efforts to reduce youth smoking rates.
Last Friday, Trump stated that a final decision regarding e-cigarette products would be announced this week, proposing to raise the minimum age for purchasing e-cigarettes from 18 to around 21 years old.
E-cigarette giant Juul previously announced that it would immediately stop selling mint-flavored e-cigarettes, as new evidence showed that such products were becoming increasingly popular among American teenagers.
