Two Hospitals Begin Selling E-Cigarettes and Set Up Vape Areas

Completely opposite to the broad restrictions on vaping devices in the United States, the UK considers vaping devices an effective alternative to traditional cigarettes and has continued to strongly promote them.
According to the BBC, two of the largest medical institutions in the Birmingham area of northern England recently began selling vaping devices and described them as a “public health necessity,” because “smoking (traditional cigarettes) kills.”
The two hospitals are Sandwell General Hospital in West Bromwich and Birmingham City Hospital. The vaping device shops opened there are operated by Ecigwizard and sell products such as Jubbly Bubbly and Wizard's Leaf.
To promote the adoption of vaping devices, the two hospitals have each set up designated vape areas and emphasized that smoking traditional cigarettes in these areas could result in a fine of £50, or about US$62.
Trust Medical Director Dr. David Carruthers said: “The trust board and our clinical leaders are united in the view that smoking traditional cigarettes causes death. Given this simple fact, we no longer support smoking anywhere on our sites, even in shelters or in cars. Every alternative is available, and we ask visitors and patients to work with us in implementing these changes. Quitting smoking saves money and protects health. On our sites, vaping devices are a public health necessity.”
A survey by the National Health Service found that in the year from 2017 to 2018, more than 480,000 hospital admissions were attributable to smoking traditional cigarettes.
Data released by the NHS this month showed that during the same period, 77,800 people in the UK died from diseases related to smoking traditional cigarettes.
According to NHS statistics, more than 14% of adults in the UK are smokers, while more than 6% of adults use vaping devices, double the share in 2014. In NHS research, half of vaping device users said they had switched over to vaping devices.
An independent report on vaping devices published last year by Public Health England concluded that vaping devices are “only a small fraction of the risk of smoking,” and stated that switching completely to vaping devices brings “substantial health benefits.”
Under the government’s plan, the goal is to eliminate traditional cigarette smoking in the UK entirely by 2030. It can be said that the vaping industry in the UK has fully entered the fast lane.
