According to the latest research from ECigIntelligence, large e-cigarette companies may soon dominate the US vaping market, while products made by smaller companies could disappear.
An analysis of FDA Premarket Tobacco Product Applications (PMTAs) shows that more applications have been submitted for simpler disposable e-cigarettes and cigarette-like devices than for open-system products. According to ECigIntelligence, the simpler products usually come from large companies, while the lack of PMTA submissions typically comes from smaller businesses.
Only about 30 brands have submitted PMTAs, which means that even if all 30 submissions are approved, 85% of brands that did not file PMTAs will be removed from the market.
“This may indicate the setbacks non-tobacco companies face when applying for PMTA approval,” said Tim Phillips, managing director of ECigIntelligence. “For non-tobacco companies without sufficient financial resources or expertise, the PMTA process can be a daunting task. If small brands become less popular in this category, consumers may soon have only a few models from a handful of large companies to choose from.”
