Citing a study, reports say that e-cigarette use in Taiwan, China has tripled since 2018.

In 2018, e-cigarette use stood at 0.6%. According to the study, which surveyed responses from 25,000 people aged 18 and above, that figure rose to 1.7% by 2020.

The highest rate of e-cigarette use was among men aged 26 to 30, at 6.3%, while women aged 21 to 25 reached 4.6%.

“From a growth perspective, conventional cigarette use increased only slightly during the same period, from 13% in 2018 to 13.1% in 2020,” said Lu Meng-ying, an official with the Tobacco Control Division. “This situation requires urgent attention, especially since nearly all new e-cigarette users are young people.”

Most respondents said they used e-cigarettes out of curiosity, while 17.3% used e-cigarettes to quit combustible cigarettes, and 9.7% used them because their friends did.

Use of flavored tobacco products is also increasing, rising from 8.2% in 2018 to 15.6% in 2020. Most of the increase came from women.

“More than 1,200 additives are used in flavored tobacco products, the vast majority of which are chemically derived,” Lu said. “Manufacturers aim to prevent potential new smokers, especially young women, from being put off by unpleasant odors.” He added that the long-term effects of using flavored products remain unclear.
