Macao’s Health Bureau is considering a total ban on e-cigarettes, expanding the current rules that already prohibit the sale, manufacture, import, and export of e-cigarettes. Lam Chong, head of the bureau’s Office for Smoking and Alcohol Prevention and Control, said the authorities are also reviewing regulatory provisions related to hookah and herbal cigarettes.

The bureau plans to pilot designated smoking areas for one year at high-traffic locations, including the Ruins of St. Paul’s and Border Gate Square, with public education to come first before penalties are enforced. Rising youth use of e-cigarettes has become a growing concern, with reports showing that more students are using e-cigarettes than traditional cigarettes.
