Cleveland Mayor Travels to Washington to Push Nationwide Ban on Flavored Cigarettes

Summary: Cleveland, Ohio Mayor Justin Bibb traveled to Washington to build support for nationwide legislation banning menthol cigarettes and flavored cigarettes. The U.S. federal government may introduce a national menthol cigarette ban.

Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb is advocating for a nationwide ban on menthol cigarettes, traveling to Washington to garner support for a federal bill to prohibit flavored cigarettes. The federal government may introduce a nationwide ban on menthol cigarettes.

According to reports from U.S. media, Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb attended an event in Washington aimed at pushing the White House to implement a nationwide ban on the sale of flavored cigarettes.

During a video conference organized by the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, Mayor Bibb stated, "We need President Biden and his administration to save thousands of lives in our city."

Last year, the Cleveland City Council proposed a bill to stop the sale of flavored tobacco products, but the measure has not yet been heard or voted on. However, other actions within the state have complicated the possibility of banning menthol cigarettes.

For Dr. David Margolius, director of the Cleveland Department of Public Health, the data on flavored cigarettes is clear: the city has the highest number of smoking-related deaths. Cleveland's smoking rate among adults is 35% (compared to the national average of 12.5%), and the city's average life expectancy is 10-20 years shorter than surrounding communities. He explained that the problem with menthol cigarettes is that they add natural cough suppressants to the flavor, causing smokers to inhale deeper and longer, making it easier to become addicted to tobacco.

In 2009, the Tobacco Control Act prohibited the sale of flavored cigarettes nationwide, except for menthol flavor.

Experts point out that timing is crucial for a federal ban on menthol cigarettes, as the FDA typically takes about a year to implement a ban, which likely needs to occur before the next presidential inauguration to take effect.
