In 2024, Sri Lanka, Azerbaijan and other markets will raise taxes on vapes
At the beginning of 2024, several countries have raised their tobacco taxes.
In Sri Lanka, the increase in consumption tax and value-added tax has prompted market leader Ceylon Tobacco Company to raise the prices of four types of cigarettes by 5 rupees ($0.02), 15 rupees, 20 rupees, and 25 rupees per cigarette, according to Asia Mirror.
The government justifies the tax hike by hoping to increase revenue streams and curb tobacco consumption.
Meanwhile, Azerbaijan has raised the consumption tax on cigarettes from 38 Azerbaijani manats ($22.35) per 1,000 cigarettes to 45.5 Azerbaijani manats per 1,000 cigarettes, according to AzerNews. The consumption tax on cigars has increased from 43 Azerbaijani manats per 1,000 cigars to 45.5 Azerbaijani manats per 1,000 cigars.
E-cigarettes and heated tobacco products now have a tax rate of 16 Azerbaijani manats per 1,000 units, up from 14 Azerbaijani manats per 1,000 units in 2023.
The consumption tax on single-use e-cigarettes, hookahs, and their alternatives has been raised from 0.25 Azerbaijani manats to 2 Azerbaijani manats.
In Belgium, a new tax on e-liquid took effect on January 1, charging €0.15 per milliliter.
