Irish 12-year-old girl suffers collapsed lung and four-day coma after excessive vaping
Sarah Griffin from Belfast, Northern Ireland, was rushed to the hospital after experiencing breathing difficulties.
She already had asthma, but vaping is believed to have worsened her condition, causing one of her lungs to collapse. Sarah reportedly finished a 4,000-puff vape in just a few days, while a standard compliant vape in the UK contains 600 puffs.
Her difficulty using a preventive inhaler put her at even greater risk.
In September, she was taken to the hospital as an emergency case, where doctors found that her oxygen levels were “very low.”
Scans showed that one of her lungs was “badly damaged,” and she also had an infection, so “all of these factors combined had a massive impact on her body, and very quickly,” said her mother, Mary.
After doctors spent four and a half hours trying to save Sarah’s life, she was rushed to intensive care and placed into an induced coma.
During that terrifying time, Mary thought her daughter was going to die.
“When you think your child is going to die, the pain is beyond words,” she said.
Fortunately, four days later, Sarah was awakened and allowed to return home to recover, but her lungs were left with permanent damage.
