Juul Labs Files PMTA for JUUL2 Mint Pods
On Tuesday, JUUL Labs announced that it is seeking FDA approval for its new mint-flavored pods. These JUUL2 pods require age verification and are designed for use with JUUL's vaping device, which is currently under regulatory review.
According to media reports, the new mint-flavored pods have a nicotine concentration of 18 mg/mL and are the latest premarket tobacco product application (PMTA) submitted by JUUL to the FDA.
Previously, JUUL Labs submitted a device with a unique Pod ID chip in July to prevent the use of counterfeit pods and limit access for minors. The July application also included a proposal for tobacco-flavored pods.
This device was launched in the UK in 2021 as part of the JUUL2 system.
The mint-flavored pods contain a safety microchip that communicates age verification requirements to the device before use. Users can lock the device at any time to prevent unauthorized use.
To mitigate the risk of social sourcing, JUUL stated it would limit not only the number of devices that can be purchased but also the number of new devices that each uniquely age-verified user can activate and use with the mint-flavored pods.
So far, the FDA has only approved 23 vaping products for sale in the U.S., all of which are tobacco-flavored. The agency has rejected mint-flavored vaping applications from several well-known manufacturers, including British American Tobacco, which are appealing these decisions.
JUUL Labs stated in a release that it has submitted evidence showing that its new mint-flavored pods can help more smokers transition from smoking to using vaping devices more effectively than tobacco-flavored vaping products.
