Illinois to Begin Enforcing Public Place Vaping Ban in Early January
Starting next month, Illinois will ban the use of e-cigarettes and other e-cigarette products in public places.
In 2007, Illinois implemented the Smoke Free Illinois Act, which banned the smoking of cigars and cigarettes indoors and within 15 feet of entrances. That law is now being strengthened and will take effect on January 1.
State Senator Julie Morrison, who introduced the bill, said in a press release: “E-cigarettes and their various forms continue to be among the most addictive products readily available at gas stations, vape shops, and online. We have made substantial progress in removing the normalization of tobacco, and I am proud that indoor use of e-cigarettes will be banned starting January 1.”
Individuals caught using e-cigarettes in public places in Illinois will face a $100 fine for a first offense.
The governor signed the bill into law in July 2019. The bill also raised the legal age to purchase tobacco products in Illinois from 18 to 21.
