UK local council voices support for government’s 'smoke-free generation' plan

Key point: Members of the Health and Wellbeing Committee of Westmorland and Furness Council have expressed support for the government’s proposed 'smoke-free generation' plan, which aims to reduce the number of smokers to below 5% of the population by 2030

The health and welfare committee members of the Westmorland and Furness Council in the UK will respond in support of the government's proposed 'smoke-free generation' plan, which aims to reduce the number of smokers to below 5% of the population by 2030.

According to Nwemail, the health and welfare committee of the Westmorland and Furness Council supports the government's proposed 'smoke-free generation' plan, which aims to reduce the number of smokers to below 5% of the population by 2030.

The government's recommendations to reduce smoking include making it a criminal offense to sell tobacco products to anyone born on or after January 1, 2009, and restricting e-cigarette flavors and descriptions to ensure they are no longer targeted at children.

The government's plan also includes regulating retail display points to keep e-cigarettes out of children's sight and away from products that attract them, and considering restrictions on the sale of disposable e-cigarettes, which are associated with an increase in use among children.

Westmorland and Furness Council's Director of Public Health, Katrina Stephens, previously stated that smoking remains the leading cause of premature death in the region.

According to Public Health England, smoking causes 84% of lung cancer deaths and increases the risk of stroke by at least 50%; the government has set a goal of achieving a smoke-free England by 2030. This means that by 2030, the smoking population will be less than 5%.

According to Stephens, to achieve this goal, 10,000 people in Westmorland and Furness must quit smoking, without others starting to smoke.
