Curitiba, Brazil: Anti-Smoking Law Also Applies to E-Cigarettes

Key points: Curitiba City Council in Brazil voted to include e-cigarettes in anti-smoking legislation, banning their use in enclosed spaces.

The Curitiba City Council in Brazil voted to include e-cigarettes under its anti-smoking law, banning their use in enclosed environments.

According to a breaking report from Brazilian media on November 28, the Curitiba City Council began voting on a proposal aimed at expanding the scope of the anti-smoking law.

The law, which has been in place since 2009—even earlier than the federal regulation—prohibits the use of cigarettes and other tobacco products in enclosed spaces throughout the city. The proposal clearly states that this ban also applies to electronic smoking devices (DEFs), commonly known as e-cigarettes.

According to reports, the measure formally incorporates explicit mention of electronic smoking devices into Curitiba’s anti-smoking law.

In addition, it stipulates that in public or private shared-use spaces, even if those places are only partially enclosed, no-smoking signs must also mention electronic devices. The initiative was approved in its first vote by 19 votes 'in favor', 7 votes 'against', and 1 'abstention'
