Malaysia's Health Ministry Launches Survey on New Tobacco Control Bill
Malaysia's Ministry of Health has launched a public feedback survey on the GEG initiative through the MySejahtera platform, aiming to prevent smoking among the new generation and protect youth from tobacco-related harm.
According to Headtopics, Malaysia's Ministry of Health (MOH) has launched a questionnaire on the MySejahtera platform to collect public feedback on the Generational End Game (GEG) initiative. The initiative would prohibit anyone born after January 1, 2007 from purchasing tobacco and smoking products.
The Ministry of Health said the GEG measure would not affect existing smokers or vaping users, but would effectively help create a protected new generation of Malaysians free from nicotine addiction and the harms of smoking products.
The GEG is one of the provisions in the draft Control of Tobacco Products for Public Health Bill 2023. The bill aims to ensure comprehensive regulation of all types of smoking products, including vaping products and e-liquid. The current Control of Tobacco Product Regulations 2004 (CTPR) only restrict tobacco-based smoking products.
Malaysia's Health Minister, YB Dr Zaliha Mustafa, said:
"The GEG provision is bold and ambitious legislation that has the potential to make a significant contribution to reducing tobacco use, as well as smoking-related disease and mortality, in Malaysia. This is how we protect our youth, loved ones, and those around us from the harms of smoking and prevent addiction."
She encouraged all Malaysians to take a few minutes to complete the survey. Everyone has a role to play by making their voices heard through this survey and available media channels in support of the government's efforts to advance the bill and the GEG provision.
