The UK government is considering restrictions on vaping flavors to combat underage smoking, with the Health Secretary expressing concerns that children are attracted to flavors and packaging like bubblegum. The government consultation is considering banning disposable e-cigarettes, restricting sales and packaging, increasing prices, prohibiting cartoon imagery, and limiting flavor descriptions. The measures aim to reduce children's exposure to e-cigarettes, particularly targeting dessert flavors. The government will also look for international best practices and may turn e-cigarettes into prescription medications.

According to ITV news on October 13, UK Health Secretary Steve Barclay stated that the government is considering how to reduce the appeal of e-cigarettes to children, especially regarding flavors like bubblegum and brightly colored packaging. As a father, he expressed concern that children might be exposed to e-cigarettes as a result.

Barclay noted that they are particularly focused on how e-cigarettes attract children with bubblegum flavors and dessert-like appearances. Currently, one in five children has tried e-cigarettes, and usage among children has tripled. He stated that the government clearly believes it is wrong to target children through e-cigarettes.

Barclay's comments were made during the launch of a government consultation on the issue. Additionally, when asked about making e-cigarettes prescription-only, he mentioned they are looking for international best practices. If e-cigarettes were to be made available only by prescription, they are concerned it would reduce the number of adults switching to e-cigarettes. He said, "We want to find a balance, which is what we are doing across the UK."

The eight-week consultation seeks views on how to help smokers quit using e-cigarettes while also looking for suggestions on how to reduce the appeal of e-cigarettes to those under 18. Options being considered include a complete ban on disposable e-cigarettes, restricting their sales, or ensuring they cannot be sold in a way that might attract young people.

Furthermore, the measures being considered by the government include: introducing more plain packaging, banning the use of cartoon and child-friendly images, regulating whether stores can display e-cigarettes, and increasing prices. In terms of e-cigarette flavors, options being considered include limiting their descriptions to make them more generic, such as prohibiting flavors like "blueberry muffin."
