Breaking news from The Wall Street Journal on September 21 reports that South Korean police are investigating 17 American soldiers and another 5 suspects who are accused of smuggling or using synthetic cannabis through military packages.
Previously, in May, at least two U.S. military bases were raided, including the largest overseas base, Humphreys Camp.
A Filipino and a South Korean have been arrested, and prosecutors are reviewing the cases of all 22 suspects. The investigation was triggered by reports from the U.S. Army's law enforcement agency, leading to a four-month investigation by South Korean authorities.
U.S. media quoted senior detective Cha Min-sik from South Korea, stating that this is one of the largest cases involving American soldiers in recent years.
South Korean police and the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Division jointly raided the homes of the 22 suspects, discovering 77 grams (2.7 ounces) of synthetic cannabis, over 4 kilograms of "mixed e-liquid" for e-cigarettes, and a total of $12,850 (approximately 94,000 RMB) in cash.
