Today’s news, on May 23, reports that after a year of recess in the Vermont General Assembly, a bill to ban the sale of flavored tobacco products and flavored e-cigarette oil products has expired.

SB 18 would prohibit the sale of e-cigarette products, such as e-liquids and other tobacco products with flavors other than tobacco.

According to Halfwheel, like other recently proposed bills in other states, this bill includes a provision that if a company claims that a product has a distinguishable flavor or aroma different from tobacco, it will be considered a flavored product.

The Vermont Senate passed SB 18 in late March, but it failed to pass the Vermont House Public Service Committee.

Several states in the Northeast have already banned or are considering banning flavored products. Connecticut has also proposed a bill to ban flavored e-cigarettes. New York, New Jersey, and Rhode Island have banned the sale of flavored e-cigarette products. Massachusetts has banned all flavored tobacco products, including flavored cigars, cigarettes, and e-cigarette products.

The ban in Vermont was initially proposed in early 2020 as a way to prevent youth usage but was shelved after the Covid-19 pandemic began to impact the state.
