“The place with the highest radiation in the world is a smoker’s lungs.” With one puff of a cigarette, 5,000 chemical substances enter the body. Whether it is active smoking or passive exposure to secondhand smoke, the harm is greater than you might imagine. In recent years, e-cigarettes have gradually entered the public eye. They are considered healthier than cigarettes while also helping satisfy nicotine cravings, which is why they quickly became popular. So how exactly do e-cigarettes help smokers quit?
How do e-cigarettes help smokers quit?
1. What is the principle behind e-cigarettes?

The working principle of e-cigarettes best highlights the difference between them and traditional cigarettes. Compared with ordinary paper cigarettes, e-cigarettes use a device to heat e-liquid and atomize it into vapor, rather than producing smoke through combustion like conventional cigarettes. The vapor from e-cigarettes does not contain tar, combustion byproducts, or harmful gases produced by incomplete burning, such as carbon monoxide. Therefore, compared with traditional cigarettes, e-cigarettes are far less harmful to the human body. They also cause much less air pollution and do not create the same secondhand smoke issue.

2. How e-cigarettes can assist with quitting smoking

Many people wonder why e-cigarettes are said to help with smoking cessation. Quitting smoking cannot be achieved overnight, and using e-cigarettes as an aid is also a gradual process. Although e-cigarettes do not burn tobacco, vaping e-liquid can still effectively satisfy nicotine cravings. For an average smoker who starts using e-cigarettes, over a period of 3–5 months the nicotine concentration in the e-liquid can be gradually reduced from high to low, and even to zero, helping the user gradually break physical dependence on nicotine. This smoking cessation principle is based on the “nicotine replacement therapy” recommended by the World Health Organization and follows a “step-by-step quitting method.” Ultimately, successfully quitting still requires strong willpower from the person trying to quit.

3. Will using e-cigarettes lead someone back to smoking cigarettes?

Compared with non-e-cigarette users, e-cigarette users respond very differently to smoking relapse. Dr. Caitlin Notley, principal researcher from Norwich Medical School at UEA, believes: “For people quitting smoking, e-cigarettes have a similar sensation and inhalation method to traditional cigarettes. They can replace traditional cigarettes in meeting the physical, psychological, and social needs of those trying to quit, while also providing a pleasurable experience. An occasional cigarette is less likely to trigger renewed cravings that send them back down the path of relapse, so e-cigarettes can strongly reduce the threat of smoking relapse.”
