E-Cigarettes Are Still Cigarettes — Non-Smokers Should Keep Away

Introduction: It's World No Tobacco Day again. Every time this comes around, the social media calls and family nagging about quitting smoking begin anew. However, this seems ineffective for long-time smokers, who continue as usual. Some suggest they try e-cigarettes to reduce harm to themselves and those around them; does this really work?

At this year's Golden Globe Awards, many people vividly remember the scenes of Leonardo DiCaprio and Julia Louis-Dreyfus puffing away on stage—don't be shocked; what they were smoking wasn't cigarettes, but e-cigarettes. E-cigarettes are a non-combustible tobacco alternative product, containing a battery, nicotine cartridge, and vaporizer within a metal tube. Users can inhale vaporized nicotine and exhale white mist, without yellowing teeth or their hair and clothes smelling like smoke, and they even have various "flavors" like strawberry, banana, chocolate, and cream. In recent years, e-cigarettes have rapidly gained popularity worldwide. Katherine Heigl showcased her e-cigarette on "The Late Late Show with James Corden," and even the host shamelessly took a few puffs.

Entrepreneurs even see e-cigarettes as a new business opportunity. Blu e-cigarettes are attempting to build a social network specifically for smokers. This product comes with an e-cigarette and a device resembling a portable hard drive, capable of emitting and searching for signals from others on the same frequency. When another "colleague" equipped with the same device appears within 50 feet, the device vibrates and flashes blue light, mimicking a social network, providing functions for exchanging and storing personal data and social information. Just as manufacturers are gearing up to promote e-cigarettes and smokers are emboldened to puff in public, the government is on edge, as many organizations are voicing concerns that e-cigarettes could be "another disaster replacing cigarettes." Researchers believe that secondhand smoke from e-cigarettes contains not only nicotine but also carcinogenic heavy metals like lead, chromium, and nickel, with concentrations even higher than those released by cigarettes, making them easier for the human body to absorb. More importantly, some teenagers are trying e-cigarettes due to the public's lenient attitude. "E-cigarettes may lead teenagers to become addicted to nicotine, and they are unlikely to give up traditional cigarettes," researchers wrote in their papers.

To address this, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently drafted the first-ever regulatory guidelines for e-cigarettes, which may prohibit sales to individuals under 18, ban vending machines, and require warning labels on related products. Amanda Sanford, research manager at anti-smoking and health organizations, believes that e-cigarettes can significantly reduce the harm caused by tobacco, but they are not a panacea. "Our research shows that two-thirds of those who try e-cigarettes ultimately choose to quit, and they themselves don't know why they do so."

Currently, the harm of e-cigarettes to humans remains unknown, but "we do not want smoking to be considered a normal behavior again, nor do we want non-smokers to see e-cigarettes as a substitute for traditional cigarettes." As Ram Moorthy from the British Medical Association said, e-cigarettes may serve as a substitute for long-time smokers trying to quit, but for non-smokers, it's best not to try them. Who knows, it might lead you to join the ranks of smokers.
