Can e-cigarettes not only help with smoking cessation but also prevent relapse? According to Vaping Post on December 3, a study titled "E-cigarettes as a Substitute for Smoking Relapse" was published in the journal Drug and Alcohol Review. The study indicates that e-cigarettes can not only assist in quitting smoking but also help prevent relapse after quitting.

The study was approved by the Medical and Health Sciences Research Ethics Committee at UEA, with Dr. Caitlin Notley from UEA Norwich Medical School as the lead researcher. She stated: "E-cigarettes are the most popular smoking cessation aid in the UK. Previous studies have shown that e-cigarettes are very effective in helping people quit smoking, as they can satisfy the physiological, psychological, and social needs of smokers as a substitute for traditional cigarettes. Besides helping with cessation, we also want to know what happens when people turn to e-cigarettes and then go back to smoking combustible cigarettes?"

"Understanding this is crucial so that we can provide advice, guidance, and support to help people maintain a smoke-free status in the long term, especially for those who may harm their health by relapsing into smoking."

The researchers surveyed 40 former smokers who had quit by switching to e-cigarettes. The results showed that about half of the participants reported occasional smoking after quitting, particularly in social situations. However, the study found that e-cigarette users reacted very differently to smoking relapse compared to non-e-cigarette users.
Can e-cigarettes help with smoking cessation Dr. Caitlin Notley concluded: "In the past, an occasional smoke after quitting was likely to lead to a full relapse, which was often considered a failure to quit. However, the emergence of e-cigarettes has changed this situation. For some e-cigarette users, an occasional smoke is permissible because it does not lead to relapse."

Dr. Caitlin Notley concluded: "For quitters, e-cigarettes have a similar taste and draw method to traditional cigarettes, satisfying the physiological, psychological, and social needs of quitters, providing a pleasurable experience. An occasional smoke does not trigger cravings for cigarettes that lead to relapse, so e-cigarettes significantly alter the threat of relapse."

The issue of quitting smoking has long troubled many smokers. Many people want to quit but feel powerless; even if they manage to stay smoke-free for a short period, they may easily relapse due to a cigarette offered by someone. This study brings good news to the quitting community, as e-cigarettes can replace traditional cigarettes to meet the physiological, psychological, and social needs of quitters, helping them quit smoking while avoiding relapse.
