According to the Daily Mail, the New South Wales government officially implemented a ban on e-cigarettes starting July 1, prohibiting the public from using e-cigarettes in any public place, with violators facing hefty fines. Residents of New South Wales who are using e-cigarettes to quit smoking will face a $550 fine (approximately 2,700 RMB) if they use e-cigarettes in public.

Critics argue that the ban may derail smokers who are trying to quit through e-cigarettes. E-cigarette users will be forced back into smoking areas, increasing the risk of resuming smoking habits. The introduction of the New South Wales smoking ban has sparked controversy among several international research organizations:

Cancer Council of NSW

(Cancer Council of NSW)

Welcomed the e-cigarette ban, citing potential “passive smoking” hazards from e-cigarettes. However, international studies indicate otherwise.

Research shows that e-cigarettes are far less harmful than cigarettes. Completely replacing cigarettes with e-cigarettes can bring significant health benefits. Related surveys found that up to 20,000 smokers successfully quit smoking after using e-cigarettes.

Australian Health Minister Greg Hunt

(Greg Hunt)

Despite these research findings, Australian Health Minister Greg Hunt remains strongly opposed to relaxing e-cigarette regulations, firmly stating that this will not happen during his tenure.

Australian Tobacco Harm Reduction Association

Chair Colin Mendelsohn stated that many international experts believe e-cigarettes do not pose health risks to bystanders. Recent surveys show that e-cigarette vapor evaporates within seconds after exhalation, while cigarette smoke particles can linger for 30 to 45 minutes.

New Nicotine Alliance Australia

Actively advocates for replacing traditional cigarettes with e-cigarettes. Alliance member Annette Huppatz shared her experience, stating that she initially tried e-cigarettes out of curiosity but gradually quit smoking over time. E-cigarettes provide a healthier alternative. Although she has over 30 years of smoking experience, that does not mean she is willing to return to smoking areas.
