There are many brands of e-cigarette heating coils, and the types of heating coils are quite varied. Here are the five main commonly used types to help you accurately identify the heating wire material you need. To fully understand some details, these five types of heating wires can be categorized into three main categories.
1. Power Heating Wires2. Temperature Control Heating Wires
3. Heating Wires that can be used for both Power and Temperature Control (For specific definitions of power heating wires and temperature control heating wires, please refer to previous articles.) Power Heating Wires
1. Kanthal Heating Wire Also known as Kanthal A1 wire, A1 wire, or Kan wire, it originates from Sweden. Swedish manufacturers provide the raw material formula for this wire to manufacturers worldwide, who then draw it into wire using their machines. Due to the limitations of the drawing process and the cost of machines, many low-cost Kanthal heating wires generally have poor quality, often appearing dirty and oily, and the raw materials contain a significant amount of iron. In humid conditions, iron can leach from the heating wire, turning the e-liquid red and affecting its flavor. Advantages: Low cost, high-temperature resistance. Disadvantages: Short lifespan, uneven heating (common issue), slow heating speed, some may have off-flavors. Characteristics: Can be tightly or loosely wound; this is because it forms an oxidized insulating layer on the surface at high temperatures, insulating the coils from each other. Based on the advantages and disadvantages, it can be understood that if you do not want to spend a lot on high-quality A1 wire, it is not recommended to purchase too much for daily practice. 2. NI80 Heating Wire Also known as NI80 wire, nickel-chromium alloy wire, or nickel-chromium wire, its formula mainly consists of nickel and chromium. Due to the high nickel content, it is relatively expensive. The formulas from different manufacturers vary; some are optimized for e-cigarette use, while others are more casual, leading to significant price differences! Advantages: Fast heating speed, even heating, long lifespan, stable characteristics. Disadvantages: Expensive, quality varies widely. Characteristics: Can be tightly or loosely wound; this is because it forms an oxidized insulating layer on the surface at high temperatures, insulating the coils from each other. Based on the advantages and disadvantages, it can be concluded that if you are willing to spend money, the overall experience with NI80 is better, which is why most expensive fancy wires are made from pure NI80 or NI90.
Temperature Control Heating Wires
1. Titanium Wire Also known as TI wire, pure titanium wire, consisting of nearly 100% titanium, with significant quality differences. Advantages: Fast heating speed. Disadvantages: Brittle at high temperatures (not recommended for excessive burning), metal elasticity makes it difficult to wind. Characteristics: Can be tightly or loosely wound; this is because it forms an oxidized insulating layer on the surface at high temperatures, insulating the coils from each other. Based on the advantages and disadvantages, titanium wire is mainly suitable for temperature control and for players who require tight winding. 2. Pure Nickel Also known as NI200, nickel wire, or pure nickel wire, consisting of nearly 100% nickel. Advantages: Fast heating speed, soft and easy to bend, pure flavor (as rumored). Disadvantages: Cannot be tightly wound. Characteristics: Can only be loosely wound; because pure nickel cannot form an insulating layer on the surface even at high temperatures, if the wires are wound tightly together, it will short-circuit. Based on the advantages and disadvantages, pure nickel wire can only be used for temperature control and is relatively specialized. Heating Wires that can be used for both Power and Temperature Control
1. Stainless Steel Wire Also known as 316 stainless steel wire, 316 wire. Mainly made from 316 or 316L stainless steel, and sometimes from 304 stainless steel. Advantages: Extremely fast heating speed, high heating capacity. Disadvantages: Short lifespan. Characteristics: Can be tightly or loosely wound; this is because it forms an oxidized insulating layer on the surface at high temperatures, insulating the coils from each other. Based on the advantages and disadvantages, stainless steel wire can be used for both temperature control and power, making it suitable for casual users. Summary For power heating wires, I recommend beginners start with A1 for practice before transitioning to NI80 heating wires. For temperature control, choose NI200, and for advanced users, select high-precision temperature control devices, as the differences in devices can be significant. As for stainless steel wire, unless you clearly need a heating wire that can handle both pressures, it is generally not recommended to purchase.
