Can Vaping Cause Cancer?

Let me answer as an e-cigarette user. I’m especially wary of those low-quality online health explanations. I’m not a professional, so I’ll just say whatever comes to mind, which may be a bit messy. There are many kinds of e-cigarettes, but in general the

As an electronic cigarette user, I would like to share my thoughts. I am particularly afraid of the superficial science popularization found on Baidu. However, I am not a professional, so I will just say whatever comes to mind, which might be a bit chaotic.

There are many types of electronic cigarettes, but generally, the principle is to use a battery to power a heating wire through a short circuit. The heating wire is wrapped in cotton that can wick e-liquid, and the e-liquid in the cotton is heated and vaporized to form vapor, which is vapor, not smoke. The difference between the two is akin to water vapor and smog; one is gaseous oil, while the other consists of various particulate matter.     Due to capillary action, the e-liquid in the cotton continuously wicks to achieve a continuous supply of e-liquid (of course, if the power is too high or the e-liquid is too viscous, it can easily burn, meaning the wicking cannot keep up).     There are several types of heating wires, most commonly 316 stainless steel, nickel wire, titanium wire, etc. These do not sublime or produce harmful gases at the temperatures achievable by battery power.     Next is the e-liquid, which comes in countless flavors, such as mint, black tea, red bean, strawberry, popcorn, cream, nut flavors, and so on. However, the main components of e-liquid include PG, VG, flavoring, and nicotine. Let’s break them down: PG is propylene glycol, a food additive recognized as safe. It is produced through the hydration of epoxide propylene. The role of PG is to create a throat hit when inhaled, similar to smoking. In reality, some people may be allergic to PG and experience discomfort, but that’s about it. VG is the abbreviation for vegetable glycerin, extracted from plants, safe and healthy, with a slight sweetness. Flavoring is for taste; it goes without saying that excessive absorption of flavoring is not good, but in the formulation of e-liquid, the proportion of flavoring is extremely low. Nicotine, according to expert research, does not cause cancer and has a stimulating effect, but long-term inhalation can reduce memory (long-term smokers are a typical example, and no decline in memory has been observed). Moreover, the nicotine content in e-liquid can be chosen; for example, choosing 3mg is equivalent to the amount found in a pack of cigarettes per day.     Compared to traditional cigarettes, electronic cigarettes do not have the particulate matter produced by burning tobacco (these are solid particles that cannot be digested when inhaled into the lungs) and do not contain tar. The vapor produced is non-toxic and harmless; at least I have not found any issues while using it, and it also allows for changing flavors of e-liquid to help quit smoking.     Let’s talk about some downsides of using electronic cigarettes: 1. Occasionally, in the morning, there is a foreign body sensation and phlegm, which may be due to an inappropriate PG content in the e-liquid; switching e-liquids can help. Having phlegm is still better than dry heaving from smoking traditional cigarettes in the morning. 2. If using a mechanical mod, there is a risk of explosion due to various reasons, such as poor quality batteries, damage, or improper operation. However, generally, using a box mod will not pose such risks, as they have circuit protection. 3. I have noticed that I use more tissues now than before I started using electronic cigarettes...     Electronic cigarettes control vapor output and working status through high-tech silicon chips and airflow sensors. Nicotine is vaporized, and the solution containing nicotine and flavoring is atomized into particles, absorbed through the lungs, while simulating smoke is exhaled. This raises the question: Is vaping harmful to the body? We can conclude that electronic cigarettes do not contain tar and other harmful components found in traditional cigarettes, nor do they produce secondhand smoke that lingers in closed spaces; traditional cigarettes burn tobacco leaves, which harms both smokers and non-smokers' health.     Currently, electronic cigarettes are widely used in developed countries in Europe and America, mainly as a replacement for traditional cigarettes. We may also wonder if electronic cigarettes are harmful to the body? Electronic cigarettes are non-toxic and relieve cravings, and they have a significant effect on smoking cessation. Electronic cigarettes do not endanger the health of smokers and do not harm the health of those around them.     Electronic cigarettes do not burn, have no open flame, and thus do not pose a fire hazard. They do not produce ash, have no secondhand smoke, and do not emit electromagnetic radiation. Therefore, we can confidently say that electronic cigarettes are not harmful to our bodies, and they can also help you quit smoking.     The groups that are suitable for electronic cigarettes include: ① Long-term smokers who feel unwell. ② Long-term workers in non-smoking areas who have a smoking habit. ③ Those who wish to quit smoking (although electronic cigarettes cannot guarantee quitting, they can assist in the process).     I have seen many discussions that are mostly based on Baidu searches, right? I would like to say that I have tried electronic cigarettes and have consulted friends who work in factories producing these products regarding their health effects.     The most harmful aspect of traditional cigarettes to the human body is the tar and other harmful substances produced by burning tobacco. The vapor from electronic cigarettes does not contain these or contains them in very low amounts. So, is it healthy?     The answer is no! Electronic cigarettes can replace traditional cigarettes because they contain the addictive substance nicotine. In traditional cigarettes, the harm of nicotine is relatively downplayed due to the presence of other harmful substances. Downplaying does not mean it is healthy; this point makes it difficult to claim that electronic cigarettes are healthy; we can only say they are relatively healthier.     Secondly, there are many small factories in China producing e-liquids for electronic cigarettes, and the technical content of these e-liquids is relatively low, and no relevant qualifications are required. The existence of these small factories increases the risk of health threats from electronic cigarettes because you do not know what they add to reduce costs; there are no industry standards or national standards.     So far, reports that have raised concerns about the dangers of electronic cigarettes are not recognized as formal reports from authoritative government-level institutions. However, there is a reliable report from the UK government that commissioned a medical institution to study electronic cigarettes, and the conclusion was that the harm of vaping is 95% less than that of smoking traditional cigarettes. Analyzing from common sense and based on some studies, my view is that vaping is not completely harmless; it may be more harmful than good air quality. Air is something you breathe in all the time, while electronic cigarettes are only occasionally used. Even in Shanghai, there are about a third of the time when air quality is poor. The harm of electronic cigarettes may not be greater than that of poor air quality. But ultimately, my view is that if you switch from traditional cigarettes to electronic cigarettes, you are certainly doing it to quit smoking. Electronic cigarettes are just a substitute for when you feel "too anxious"; so treat them as a substitute for those moments, and there is no need to force a cessation or smoke as frequently as before.

Mumu Miao Miao     If you purely discuss electronic cigarettes without considering quitting, what are you doing? In China, those who use electronic cigarettes are mostly doing so to quit smoking. There is no doubt that electronic cigarettes are harmful, but their harm is much less than that of traditional cigarettes. I would like to remind beginners a few points: 1. Do not pursue high-end heating wires; iron-chromium alloy is sufficient. A regulated box mod is fine; do not play with temperature control, and do not lung inhale; mouth-to-lung is better. 2. Choose imported e-liquids and gradually reduce nicotine content. 3. All explosions are from mechanical mods.

Lure Da Na     I will just say one thing: for smokers, electronic cigarettes are a hundred times healthier than traditional cigarettes. The components of electronic cigarettes include water, vegetable glycerin, propylene glycol, flavoring, and sugar/sweeteners. Do not buy too cheap products to save money; e-liquids from legitimate channels are relatively safer and definitely less harmful than traditional cigarettes.

Yang Ge Yang Ge     Think about how much profit cigarette factories make; they are often the largest taxpayers in the area. Owning a cigarette factory abroad makes you a wealthy person, while in China, cigarette factories can only be state-owned.     Once electronic cigarettes become popular, traditional cigarette factories will have a hard time. In the face of the huge profits from cigarette production, how could the big tobacco companies not smear electronic cigarettes? Therefore, electronic cigarettes must be carcinogenic.     Moreover, the harm of nicotine in cigarettes is far less than that of tar. At least electronic cigarettes do not contain tar, and you do not cough when you inhale them, which is certainly better than traditional cigarettes. If you can quit, that’s best; if you can’t, vaping is still better than smoking traditional cigarettes.
