A Netflix documentary is focusing on the outbreak of EVALI (e-cigarette or vaping product use-associated lung injury) in the United States, while also highlighting Juul and its "contribution" to the youth vaping "epidemic."
In a recently aired Netflix docuseries, among other topics, it explores issues related to e-cigarettes. The episode titled "E-Cigarettes" in the series "The Social Dilemma" discusses the notorious EVALI outbreak while focusing on the popularity of JUUL products among teenagers. An expert in the trailer states, "We are seeing an unprecedented increase in the number of young people using e-cigarettes."
In the trailer, Juul co-founder Adam Bowen reiterates that their products are not intended for minors. "We strongly oppose underage use of our products," he said.
Juul has taken measures to limit access to its products.
However, in response to President Trump's announcement a few months ago to ban all flavored e-cigarette products, Juul recently stopped selling its flavored pods online, leaving only mint, menthol, and tobacco-flavored pods available for sale.
But that is not enough. The National Institute on Drug Abuse recently released data showing that in 2019, surveyed teenagers preferred mint and mango flavors. However, mint was the most popular flavor among 10th and 12th-grade Juul users, and the second most popular flavor among 8th-grade users.
Additionally, among surveyed students, 18% reported starting to use e-cigarettes recently, and nearly 13% said they used Juul e-cigarettes. In response, Juul has also banned mint pods, leaving only menthol and the other two tobacco-flavored products available for sale.
