On September 12, according to The Hill, U.S. Senator Mitt Romney urged federal health authorities to consider recalling e-cigarettes following recent hospitalizations and deaths related to vaping.

Romney expressed concern in a letter to Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar about experts not knowing the causes of illnesses, aside from the fact that individuals were using e-cigarettes.

For the Food and Drug Administration to consider a recall, products must be dangerous and defective to the extent that they "are expected to cause serious health problems or death."

Romney stated in his letter that Azar should consider whether the relevant e-cigarettes meet the threshold of "causing health issues."

Federal health officials have yet to identify a single e-cigarette product or substance connecting all cases.

Most patients reported using e-cigarette products containing cannabis elements, including THC, but some patients also reported using nicotine-containing products.
