Lawmakers Gabler and Sankey Back Ending the Tobacco Wholesale Tax
Harrisburg - State Representatives Matt Gabler (R-Clearfield/Elk) and Tommy Sankey (R-Clearfield/Cambria) joined members of the House Finance Committee on Tuesday to advance legislation that would replace the 40% sales tax on e-cigarettes and vapor products with a 5-cent per milliliter tax on vapor products. House Bill 2342 is now ready for consideration.<\/p>
“Pennsylvania has about 350 small businesses dealing in vapor products, and this tax threatens to close many of them,” Gabler said. “The result will be job losses at local internet retailers and a lack of options for many smokers who are turning to alternatives to traditional cigarettes.”
House Bill 2342 mirrors legislation already enacted in North Carolina and Louisiana.
“The impact of these store closures will be felt by hardworking Pennsylvanians and their families and will lead to significant tax revenue losses at both the state and local levels,” Sankey said. “The sooner we can move this legislation through the process, the less punitive this tax will be for those affected by it.”
