CDC: 57 Deaths and 2,602 Illnesses Linked to Vaping-Related Lung Disease
On January 10, according to CNN, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported on Thursday that lung injuries related to vaping have resulted in 57 deaths across 27 states and the District of Columbia, including the youngest victim at 15 years old.

As of January 7, a total of 2,602 people have been hospitalized due to vaping-related lung injuries across 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Among the 27 states and the District of Columbia, 57 deaths have been confirmed, including Alabama, California, Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, and Virginia.

Dallas County health officials reported on New Year's Eve that a teenager with chronic underlying health conditions has become the first death in the county linked to the lung disease outbreak.

On Thursday, the Dallas County Health and Human Services confirmed to CNN that the individual was 15 years old.

The CDC did not provide details about the deceased's identity.

The agency did state that the median age of deceased patients was 51 years, with ages ranging from 15 to 75. The agency noted that more deaths are still under investigation.

The CDC released a previous report on December 31 regarding the outbreak of lung injuries related to vaping, documenting 2,561 cases of vaping-related lung injuries requiring hospitalization and confirming 55 deaths, the youngest being 17 years old.

The CDC decided in early December to only report cases that resulted in hospitalization.

The CDC stated that data suggests the outbreak may have peaked in September but states continue to report new cases and deaths to the agency weekly.

The CDC advises people not to use vaping products containing THC. The agency stated that while it appears that the thickening agent vitamin E acetate used in some vaping products is linked to lung injury cases, it cannot rule out other chemicals.

Additionally, no single product or brand has been identified as the culprit.
