Altria Group Distribution Co. and Juul Labs announced their support for TruAge, a new digital solution designed to enhance the current age verification system and protect user privacy. Developed by the National Association of Convenience Stores and Conexxus, TruAge makes it easier and more accurate to verify customers' ages when purchasing age-restricted products. At the same time, the system makes identity theft more difficult. One-time use tokens are only used to share the most important elements to confirm that the purchaser has reached the legal age, which also protects user privacy.
TruAge is free for retailers, consumers, and POS providers, and its related intellectual property will be placed in the public domain—removing barriers to adoption. Scott Myers, President and CEO of Altria Group Distribution Company, said: “We are pleased to join this important initiative as TruAge deepens our trade partners' support for preventing underage access and helps make retail the most trusted place for responsibly selling tobacco products.” In a statement, he added: “Over the past few years, we have worked closely with retail partners across the United States to implement enhanced access controls on the sale of Juul products, automatically requiring electronic ID scans to verify that purchasers are at least 21 years old, and limiting the number of products sold to reduce social sourcing.”
“We are eager to support TruAge and expand this technology-based age verification solution to all vaping and other age-restricted products to combat underage use and support a more responsible market.” TruAge is also supported by over 130 retail companies representing more than 22,000 convenience stores across the U.S., as well as four industry point-of-sale providers.
