WS-23 is a well-known synthetic cooling agent widely used in food, pharmaceuticals, and tobacco. As a common cooling agent in e-liquid, WS-23 has raised concerns about its inhalation toxicity and the spread of e-cigarettes in recent years. Studies show that inhaling WS-23 at tested dose levels does not produce toxic side effects in test animals.

"Product safety has always been a top priority for RLX and is our direction and commitment in research and development," said Jiang Xingtai, head of RELX Lab, which is part of RLX Technology, in a statement. Before this study was published, RELX Lab conducted in vitro tests to demonstrate that aerosolized WS-23 can be safely used in products.
