The vape store coupon program, launched in December 2019, is a pilot project aimed at promoting smoking cessation. Smokefree Norfolk's innovative program offers vape vouchers to residents of Great Yarmouth, where smoking rates are higher than average.
“Research shows that vaping is an effective smoking cessation method compared to nicotine replacement therapies (such as patches and gum), and vaping is now the most commonly used smoking cessation support method,” said Dr. Caitlin Notley, who leads the study at UEA Medical School and is a member of the Norfolk Tobacco Control Alliance. The vouchers, issued by GPs and Smokefree Norfolk, can be redeemed at local vape shops for starter vape kits. Interested individuals will also receive advice on vaping products and additional support from Smokefree Norfolk.
Vaping is considered the most effective smoking cessation tool.
Indeed, consistent with several other studies, Dr. Notley's previous research indicates that vaping products are excellent smoking cessation tools. Notley stated, “People are very interested in methods to help coastal communities like Great Yarmouth quit smoking.”
“It is important to conduct independent evaluations of such pilot projects so that we can draw strong conclusions about whether they yield positive outcomes; if not, we can provide recommendations for future practices and services,” she added.
Jay Marsh, manager of the Vape department at the participating direct sales agency, emphasized his enthusiasm for helping people quit smoking as a former smoker himself. “My main goal is to help people quit smoking. As a former smoker, I know this is a huge leap, and I can understand from personal experience how vaping helped me quit. Therefore, I am very pleased to work with Smokefree Norfolk to create this great program to help other smokers achieve this goal.”
