UK Survey Shows Public Views on Vaping Remain Divided

Despite fear sparked by EVALI in the US and concerns about youth vaping, UK health bodies fully support vaping as a smoking cessation tool and continue urging smokers to switch.
Despite the panic caused by the EVALI outbreak and concerns about e-cigarettes spreading across the United States, as well as worries about youth vaping, health and medical authorities in the UK, including the National Health Service and Public Health England, have fully recognized e-cigarettes as a smoking cessation method and continue to urge smokers to switch to e-cigarettes.

Unfortunately, this positive stance has not dissipated as expected among the UK public. The survey aimed to determine the public's views on using e-cigarettes as a smoking cessation tool and whether they believe e-cigarettes have public health benefits.

The aggregated data indicates that the majority of participants (34.9%) do not believe vaping has public health benefits, while 26% are uncertain. On the other hand, 24.1% believe e-cigarettes could be beneficial to public health, and only 15% think e-cigarettes are good for health.

When asked about the fear-based narratives surrounding vaping in the US, most participants (40.4%) stated they had no opinion due to insufficient information. Over a third (35%) of respondents expressed concern about deaths related to EVALI.

A quarter (24.4%) of respondents stated they were "not at all" influenced by the panic surrounding vaping in the US, while about a third (31.2%) believed that all concerns related to vaping might be exaggerated. The media was deemed completely unfounded by 14.6% of respondents. Approximately 22.2% believed media reports were accurate, while 32% stated they did not know.

Many people would discourage smokers from switching to e-cigarettes.

When asked if they would encourage smokers to switch to e-cigarettes to quit, nearly half (48.9%) expressed unwillingness, 31.5% said they might, and 19.6% said they definitely would. Respondents were also asked whether they believed smoking would help the UK achieve the government’s smoke-free goal by 2030. A total of 42.7% believed it would not, 17.2% thought smoking might help, while 11.2% agreed it would help.

Upon reviewing the compiled data, researchers concluded that media headlines have had a very negative impact on the public. "Our survey shows that most people are confused by negative media coverage, while at the same time, they distrust these news reports, especially those sensationalized by tabloids," said Pascal Culverhouse, Managing Director of the e-tobacco company.
