UK Government Urges Vapers to Charge E-Cigarettes Properly

The UK government is urging vapers to charge e-cigarettes correctly and use only manufacturer-recommended batteries, warning that improper battery use can create serious safety risks.
Most e-cigarettes and vaping devices are powered by 18650 batteries, which are slightly larger than standard AA batteries. The campaign insists that, because the chemical properties and voltage of these batteries can vary, vapers should only use batteries recommended by the manufacturer.
Mark Gardiner, CTSI’s head of product safety, said: “There have been many reports of devices using these batteries failing in dangerous ways, causing serious injury and even death. These devices are usually fitted with battery management systems to ensure safe charging and discharging.”

Gardiner added: “Problems can arise when retailers use unsuitable batteries or when consumers replace them, and many consumers are looking for the cheapest battery or the one with the highest capacity.”

The right way to charge a vape
It is said that the London Fire Brigade attends around 24 fires a week caused by batteries, chargers, and similar items. Both the London Fire Brigade and the OPSS say that e-cigarettes should not be left charging overnight. In addition, e-cigarette batteries should be protected from extreme temperatures, devices should be unplugged once fully charged, and spare batteries should be kept away from metal objects.

Gardiner pointed out: “Many 18650 batteries were not designed for use in vaping devices, and some manufacturers have said their 18650 batteries were not intended for use in the high-powered handheld devices favored by many in the vaping community.” “When replacing batteries, it is important to always check the type of battery being used and whether the manufacturer considers it safe for use in a vape.”
