Massachusetts sues Juul

Massachusetts has sued Juul, alleging the company bought online ads on youth-oriented websites after launching its devices in 2015 as part of marketing that targeted teenagers.
The Massachusetts Attorney General's Office filed a lawsuit last month, accusing Juul Labs Inc. of purchasing online advertisements on websites targeting teenagers, such as Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, and Seventeen magazine, after launching its devices in 2015.

As early as 2018, Massachusetts initiated an investigation to determine whether the well-known e-cigarette manufacturer Juul Labs Inc. and two online retailers failed to prevent minors from purchasing e-cigarette devices, potentially violating state laws.

In response to questions regarding the investigation, Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey explained that her office is sending cease-and-desist letters to Direct Eliquid LLC and Eonsmoke LLC, requesting that the online companies stop selling Juul and other devices to Massachusetts residents without adequate age verification systems. She stated at the time: "Most importantly, we must ensure the safety and health of young people."

Accusations of advertising on educational websites

The results of this investigation led to a lawsuit accusing Juul Labs of purchasing advertising space on websites that are "very appealing to children, middle school and high school teenagers, and underage college students." According to the lawsuit, this includes educational websites such as coolmath-games.com and socialstudiesforkids.com.

The Attorney General's Office stated that these purchases began when the device was launched in 2015 and continued until 2016. In response to these allegations, a Juul spokesperson pointed out that the company is making every effort to prove itself trustworthy. "Although we have not yet reviewed the complaint, we remain focused on... earning the trust of society by working with attorneys general, regulators, and public health officials to combat youth usage..."
