Juul Halts Sales in Indonesia Over Underage Sales Control Failures

JUUL has reportedly halted sales in Indonesia as the company faces increasing scrutiny over controls intended to prevent underage access while continuing its international expansion efforts.
Last summer, reports revealed that the company had received $325 million in investments from undisclosed sources to continue its expansion into international markets, making it the most notorious e-cigarette manufacturer, Juul Labs.

This investment, filed through regulatory documents, clearly indicates that despite the negative press, Juul continues to perform strongly. The manufacturer has also been working hard to restore its reputation lost after merging with tobacco company Altria.

In 2019, Juul established an "enterprise market team" focused on agreements with health plans, providers, self-insured employers, and the public sector. After being accused of paying social media influencers to entice the younger generation to use their devices, the company minimized its social media impact. Furthermore, before the FDA ban was issued at the end of 2019, Juul Labs decided to stop selling flavored pods to demonstrate its commitment to addressing youth smoking issues.

Additionally, in March 2019, Juul hired former Cardinal Health executive Douglas Roberts to lead its new "enterprise market team," which includes 17 employees dedicated to agreements with health plans, providers, self-insured employers, and the public sector.

"What we are hearing is very consistent; this is something that is not working today, and people are really looking for solutions on how to provide alternatives for a large number of people who are not really being served effectively," Roberts said at the time.

Sales will be paused until age restrictions are set.

Moreover, many will certainly view the latest decision regarding sales in Indonesia as merely a planned marketing move. Juul stated in a statement that it would pause sales in Indonesia until the company can ensure local online and traditional retailers "increase and enforce age restrictions and compliance measures."

An article by Reuters correctly pointed out that the decision to "withdraw from the world's fourth most populous country" will undoubtedly mark a significant setback for Juul's expansion plans in Asia, which have been deemed crucial given the company's increasingly serious issues at home.
