Juul Plans to Launch an Age-Verification Vaping Product
Under pressure from lawmakers, health agencies, and parents, Juul plans to launch a vaping product with age-verification features to address concerns over youth access.
U.S. lawmakers, health agencies, and angry parents have continued to blame Juul for fueling what is now widely described as the youth vaping crisis. Since its tie-up with Altria, the manufacturer has lost credibility, despite continuing to frame its products around harm reduction, and it has also been facing multiple lawsuits.
In response, Juul has been doing everything it can to convince the FDA and the broader public that it intends to make every effort to prevent youth use. Last summer, the company introduced a new product designed to help monitor users by collecting information about them, such as when and where they vape, and it can even use facial recognition features to keep the device out of children’s hands.
New technology
In Canada and the UK, Juul devices can verify age and track nicotine consumption, while devices in the United States can be age-locked but cannot track nicotine consumption.
The San Francisco-based company is expected to submit the product to the FDA by May 12, along with more than 250,000 pages of material, including scientific research, marketing materials, and its strategies for preventing and curbing illegal use.
In Canada and the UK, Juul devices have the ability to connect to an app that can verify a user’s age and track nicotine consumption. Although U.S. devices will be age-locked, they will not be able to track nicotine consumption.
Juul and Altria working side by side
Tobacco giant Altria is helping Juul promote its app. A Juul official said: “Altria is working side by side with us and has provided extensive support.” Meanwhile, last November, the tobacco company announced plans to reduce the value of its 35% stake in Juul Labs by $4.5 billion. In a regulatory filing, the company referenced the FDA’s flavored product ban, but added that there was no “single decisive event or factor” behind the writedown decision.
