Starting today (January 16), Mexico has imposed a comprehensive ban on the sale, import, and marketing of e-cigarettes and vaping devices. The ban stems from amendments to the General Health Law published in Mexico’s Federal Official Gazette. The new rules impose a total ban on all e-cigarette devices, including disposable vapes, rechargeable e-cigarettes, and nicotine-free e-cigarettes, as well as related accessories and substances, and prohibit all forms of advertising or promotion across all media.

Personal possession and use remain legal as long as there is no commercial purpose involved; however, violators of the new rules may face prison sentences of one to eight years and fines of up to 2,000 times the value of the daily measurement unit (UMA). Health authorities are also empowered to seize non-compliant products and shut down offending premises.
