Turkey plans to further tighten its already very strict tobacco control regime. Health Minister Kemal Memisoglu said legislative work to expand indoor smoking bans is nearing completion and is expected to be submitted to parliament soon for review. Memisoglu noted that these measures are intended to strengthen the fight against tobacco addiction by improving smoke-free environments and expanding the scale of smoking cessation clinics and mobile cessation service teams nationwide. Although smoking bans have long been enforced by authorities, Turkey’s smoking rate still exceeds one-quarter of the total population. This latest move builds on Turkey’s long-standing tobacco control policies, including comprehensive indoor smoking bans, plain packaging, advertising bans, and restrictions on vaping devices.
