Since June 5, South Australia has issued 100 28-day closure orders to stores selling illegal tobacco and vaping products, seizing goods worth about AUD 50 million (USD 32.5 million), including 41 million cigarettes, 140,000 vapes, and 13,585 kilograms of loose tobacco. The closures are part of a state government-led crackdown on illegal tobacco, supported by a AUD 16 million (USD 10.4 million) illicit tobacco task force targeting retail outlets in both metropolitan and remote areas. Two stores have already received long-term closure orders, while five more cases are currently being heard in the Magistrates Court.

The Malinauskas government emphasized that the crackdown is aimed at disrupting organized crime networks. Large-scale illegal sales can result in fines of up to AUD 6.6 million (USD 4.3 million), while landlords who knowingly allow such sales may face penalties of up to AUD 50,000 (USD 32,500).
