A Brazilian man was hospitalized for a month after developing hemoptysis linked to long-term use of e-cigarettes, drawing widespread attention. E-cigarettes are banned for sale in Brazil, yet their safety still lacks scientific support. Brazil's National Health Surveillance Agency is currently holding a public consultation on whether to lift the ban on e-cigarettes.

According to a quick report from Brazilian media dm, a man has been hospitalized for a month at a hospital in Brasilia due to severe hemoptysis, meaning coughing up blood. Doctors believe this may have been caused by his long-term use of e-cigarettes.

The man had been using e-cigarettes for the past three months. Since their sale is prohibited in Brazil, he began coughing up blood a month ago and realized he needed medical attention. In an interview with TV Globo, he said: "Every day my symptoms got worse. I went to a private pulmonologist, but after many tests he still couldn't find anything wrong."

As a result, the doctor sent him home, but the symptoms did not go away, so he went to the emergency room at Hospital Regional da Asa Norte. He said that one day he coughed up 600 milliliters of blood.

Since 2009, Brazil has enforced regulations banning the sale, import, and advertising of e-cigarette devices, including accessories and pods. Brazil's National Health Surveillance Agency (Agência Nacional de Vigilancia Sanitária) launched a public consultation on December 12 to decide whether to lift the e-cigarette ban; the consultation will run until February 9, giving the public 60 days to participate.
