Biden Administration Under Pressure: Debate Over a Flavor Tobacco Ban Ahead of the 2024 Election
U.S. President Joe Biden is facing a decision on whether to ban flavored tobacco, a move that could affect his prospects in the 2024 election. The Biden administration is under pressure from multiple states to make a decision on a menthol cigarette ban as soon as possible.
According to a recent report by the Daily Mail, President Joe Biden is facing growing pressure ahead of the 2024 election. His proposal to ban various flavored tobacco products has reached a stalemate, as Democratic leaders strongly push for the ban while also trying not to alienate Black voters.
Last month, due to political opposition and warnings that the move could anger Black voters who have already drifted away from the president, the Biden administration slowed its push for a nationwide menthol cigarette ban. The rule is now expected to be finalized in March this year—later than the originally planned January timeline.
In an effort not to alienate Black voters in the upcoming 2024 election, President Joe Biden is facing increasing pressure as his proposal to ban various flavored tobacco products remains deadlocked. Late last year, the Biden administration hesitated over implementing a nationwide menthol cigarette ban because of political backlash and warnings that it could spark dissatisfaction among Black voters at the ballot box.
However, more than 20 Democratic-led states, including California, argue that the health benefits of banning flavored tobacco outweigh the political risks Biden may face during the campaign.
A coalition led by California Attorney General Rob Bonta submitted a statement to the White House, arguing that the time is “now” to reduce cigarette use and save lives by banning the sale of flavored tobacco products.
It is worth noting that California Governor Gavin Newsom has already become a key surrogate for Biden’s re-election campaign, and he is actively working to reduce the political risk of Biden’s proposal during the primaries. Recently, a group of menthol cigarette supporters staged a large-scale “menthol cigarette funeral” in the square outside the White House.
At the same time, Biden’s push to ban menthol cigarettes has also drawn criticism because he is simultaneously working to advance marijuana decriminalization. However, senior Biden administration officials insist that banning menthol cigarettes would help Americans gradually break their dependence on them.
U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Xavier Becerra previously said, “The proposed rule would help prevent children from becoming the next generation of smokers and help adult smokers quit. In addition, the proposed rule is an important step forward in advancing health equity and could significantly reduce tobacco-related health disparities.”
