Smoking is an old habit, but in recent years, with the rise of vaping devices, people have begun rethinking the way they smoke. Survey data shows that over the past two years, more than one-third of teenagers aged 15 to 19 reported having tried vaping at some point, and 15% had used vaping devices within the past 30 days. That is nearly five times the rate among adults aged 25 and older. Among young people who reported vaping, most used liquids containing nicotine.

The Difference Between E-Cigarettes and Cigarettes

Let me use myself as an example. I’m 21 this year. I started smoking in the second year of middle school and kept smoking until I was 20. At one point, my dependence was pretty heavy—at the most, about a pack and a half a day, which honestly scared even me. My teeth turned yellow, my mouth smelled bad, and my body always carried a lingering cigarette odor. Also, my throat was often inflamed, and later I was diagnosed with pharyngitis, which was very uncomfortable. Every morning I especially felt like dry heaving, and sometimes it was severe. Occasionally, my lungs would hurt too. That was basically my condition.

My first vaping device was bought by my partner. After that, I decided to use it as a replacement for cigarettes. Since last September, I haven’t touched cigarettes again. The most obvious change is that my lungs no longer hurt—not even once since I switched. My pharyngitis flares up less often too, maybe only twice since last year. There’s no bad smell in my mouth anymore—according to my girlfriend—and there’s no unpleasant smell on my clothes or body either. That’s roughly how it’s been for me.

It can replace cigarettes, but it doesn’t necessarily help you quit nicotine. Some people may even find their dependence getting stronger, and I’ve seen a lot of people ask about that. It didn’t happen to me, but when I looked into it, I found that many of them were using nicotine salt products, taking puff after puff without restraint. Nicotine salts are already easier to become dependent on, so if you keep using them heavily and don’t control yourself, your dependence is naturally going to increase. In any case, it’s best not to overuse nicotine salt products, since they can increase nicotine dependence more easily than freebase nicotine.

There are many obvious differences between e-cigarettes and cigarettes, including the following:

Different ingredients: E-cigarettes usually consist of a battery, a heating element, and e-liquid. The liquid contains ingredients such as nicotine, flavorings, glycerin, and propylene glycol. Traditional cigarettes, by contrast, contain tobacco along with many harmful chemical substances.

Different method of use: E-cigarettes heat the liquid to produce vapor, which the user inhales. Cigarettes burn tobacco to produce smoke, and the user inhales the harmful substances in that smoke.

Smell and flavor: E-cigarettes can come in a variety of flavors, such as fruit, mint, and chocolate, while the smell and taste of cigarettes mainly come from tobacco.

Secondhand smoke: What e-cigarettes produce is vapor, which generally contains fewer harmful substances and has a relatively smaller impact on bystanders. Cigarette secondhand smoke contains a large number of harmful chemicals and poses a threat to the health of people nearby.

Vaping devices work by atomizing and heating e-liquid to produce a large amount of vapor. E-liquid contains ingredients such as PG/VG, flavorings, and nicotine. Because it lacks tar, vaping does differ from smoking traditional cigarettes to some extent.

Traditional cigarettes produce tar, carbon monoxide, and thousands of harmful substances after combustion. Tar and carbon monoxide alone can lead to health problems such as emphysema.

Which Is More Harmful, E-Cigarettes or Cigarettes?

Not smoking at all is definitely the best option. But for smokers, choosing a relatively lower-risk vaping device can still be a somewhat better choice. I’ve been using an OKK atomizer for 8 months, and so far I haven’t noticed any other negative physical issues.

As for whether e-cigarettes or cigarettes are more harmful, the scientific community has not yet reached a consensus. However, some studies suggest that while e-cigarettes may be somewhat safer than traditional cigarettes, they are still not completely harmless. The nicotine in e-cigarettes remains addictive, and long-term use may have adverse health effects, especially on the cardiovascular and respiratory systems. In addition, the potential harm of other ingredients in e-cigarettes is still not fully understood.

The main concerns around e-cigarettes are related to the e-liquid. In theory, vaping is less harmful than smoking because it does not involve tar, carbon monoxide, or other harmful substances produced by combustion, so choosing better-quality e-liquid is very important. It is said that domestic e-liquid standards and regulation in China are still not clearly defined (that’s something I saw online, so it may or may not be accurate), so I’ve always bought imported products instead, just for peace of mind.

Although there are some obvious differences between e-cigarettes and cigarettes, neither is harmless. Smoking in any form may harm health, so the best approach is to avoid smoking altogether or seek effective ways to quit in order to protect your health. #p#Page Title#e#
