UK moves toward smoke-free goal, with vaping playing a key role in smoking cessation
In the past year, the number of independent vape shops in the UK has significantly increased again, as part of a plan to restrict sales to children to create a "smoke-free generation."
According to detailed survey data from the Local Data Company (LDC), 233 independent vape shops opened in 2023, a significant increase from 61 in 2022, far exceeding the net decrease of 23 in 2021.
According to LDC, there are currently 3,573 specialized vape shops in the country.
The number of these specialized vape shops indicates that, despite the pandemic-related shift towards online retailers, physical vape shops remain healthy.
The data for specialized vape shops does not include most convenience stores, post offices, newsstands, and corner shops that also sell vape products and related supplies.
According to data released in December by market research firm NIQ and trade magazine The Grocer, the sales value of vape products in the UK grew by £897.4 million this year. The Lost Mary brand under Chinese vape company Heaven Gifts is the fastest-growing product in the UK, with sales increasing by £310.6 million compared to last year.
NIQ stated that vape products also saw growth in sales volume, while the sales value of cigarettes, cigars, and loose tobacco decreased by £849.1 million and £393.1 million, respectively.
Experts believe that in the cost-of-living crisis, the vape industry is one of the few direct beneficiaries, as the average price of a pack of 20 cigarettes is £14.57, while a disposable vape offers a similar number of puffs for about £5, and refillable devices provide half the equivalent nicotine amount.
However, the government has plans to strengthen restrictions on vaping to protect children and gradually phase out cigarette sales.
The "Tobacco and Vaping Bill" will "create a smoke-free generation" by "restricting tobacco sales... and limiting the sale and marketing of vaping products to children."
The government stated that this will effectively raise the legal age for tobacco sales by one year each year to prevent the current and future generations from starting to smoke.
The King's Speech also promised to "further tackle the issue of youth smoking," with consultations underway to understand how to encourage adult smokers to use vaping as a cessation tool while protecting children.
The consultations are asking for opinions on whether disposable vapes (the preferred choice among youth) should be banned or restricted and whether more measures should be taken regarding pricing.
Although smoking under the age of 18 is illegal, one in five children have now tried smoking, and the number of children using vapes has tripled in the past three years.
According to government documents, smoking costs the UK about £17 billion each year, with lost productivity alone accounting for £10 billion annually.
This cost far exceeds the £10 billion raised from tobacco product taxes, the documents show.
By creating a smoke-free generation, the smoking rate among those aged 14 to 30 could approach zero by 2040, according to calculations.
John Dunne, Director General of the UK Vaping Industry Association, stated: "Independent specialized vape shops in the UK play an important role in providing smokers with advice on how to best transition to vaping and ultimately quit smoking."
"Vaping has been proven to be the most effective way for smokers to quit, helping about 50,000 smokers overcome their addiction each year. The increase in the number of specialized vape shops reflects the demand from smokers who want to quit a habit that takes the lives of over 200 people daily in the UK."
