Manitoba, Canada, plans to begin imposing a vaping tax in 2024
Manitoba is preparing to join other provinces in imposing a tax on vaping products next year as a way to deter people from using e-cigarettes, especially among young people.
The New Democratic Party government plans to double the existing federal excise tax in the spring budget and intends to start collecting this tax on July 1.
Premier Wab Kinew stated, "The vaping tax is a way for us to communicate the dangers of e-cigarettes to young people and all Manitobans."
"This is also a step to align Manitoba with other provinces."
Kinew indicated that the excise tax is expected to generate CAD 11 million in revenue over the year, which will help fund vaping and anti-smoking programs.
The federal government implemented the latest tax last fall, and some provinces have also introduced their own taxes. Saskatchewan announced a 20% provincial tax in 2021.
Last month, Ontario announced it would double the federal excise tax, and Manitoba plans to do the same. The combined tax will require manufacturers and importers to pay CAD 2 for every 2 milliliters of e-liquid for the first 10 milliliters, and then CAD 2 for every additional 10 milliliters.
The Manitoba Lung Association welcomed Kinew's plan.
